Shimadzu Corp. jumped 3.2 percent after Nomura Holdings Inc. upgraded the precision-tool manufacturer��s shares. Daikin Industries Ltd., a maker of air conditioners that gets 18 percent of sales from China, climbed 2.1 percent. Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co., Japan��s biggest listed insurer, sank 4 percent on a report the company is preparing to buy Protective Life Corp. for a sum probably exceeding 500 billion yen ($4.9 billion) to expand in the U.S.
The Topix gained 1.3 percent to 1,217.23 at the break in Tokyo, with all but one of its 33 sectors climbing. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average added 1.8 percent to 14,894.80. Data showed Chinese manufacturing expanded at the fastest pace in five months, while Japan��s capital spending rose the most since 2012. The yen slid 0.3 percent to 102.04 per dollar.
